Sacramento is currently the most expensive city in the United States for hotel accommodations, according to the latest survey by Cheaphotels.org. The survey compared hotel rates across 50 urban destinations and determined the average rate for the least expensive double room during October 2020. Only centrally located hotels with a 3-star rating or higher were considered.
Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted this year’s results. In other years, cities including New York City and Washington D.C. would’ve topped the rankings.
Sacramento’s average price for the most affordable double room was $131. Cincinnati and Phoenix took second and third place with at average rates of $118 and $111, respectively.
Due to the pandemic, hotel accommodations are 50% more affordable now in several destinations including Boston, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
San Francisco and New York City are priced even cheaper—about 60% lower compared to 2019—with average rates of $78 and $73 for the most affordable room, respectively.
Destinations that are less reliant on foreign visitors are showing more resilience, according to the survey. Cincinnati and Sacramento, for example, are more affordable by just 30%.
The least significant COVID impact is recorded in Jacksonville, Indianapolis, and Fresno, with hotel rates dropping by less than 10%.
